Good Friday Tenebrae Service
March 29 | 7:00 pm | Sanctuary
"Tenebrae" is the Latin word meaning "darkness." Good Friday’s Tenebrae Service will adapt an ancient practice of reflection on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. During the service, the account of the suffering and death of Jesus from John’s gospel is read in several parts. After each segment is read, a candle is extinguished, and those present join their voices in song. After the last of the candles is extinguished, a loud sound (called strepitus in Latin) is made to convey the effect of the death of Jesus. The final story of his burial is read in near darkness. Worshipers then leave in silence to ponder the Lord’s death in anticipation of the coming Resurrection.
Childcare available for children through Grade 3.
